I was at Josi's place to follow a tradition. Watching the Eurovison Song Contest 2006. It's way more fun doing that with others then watching it alone. And I think we had fun last night. So there we were with chips and Pro-Secco and expectations. Oh and four phones in place to be able to vote. And we had vote sheets even, for comments.. :)
It is amazing that when I look around I either find reviews agreeing with my own opinion (and that almost to every point) or they say the total oppsite and like songs I will refuse to listen to now. [livejournal.com profile] slippery_fish and I kinda feared/thought that a rather conventional song like Sweden or Bosnia-Herzegowina would win, because those were really typical Grand Prix songs, and we know that those have good chances. But that Finland rocked the house and clearly won with 292 points is totally awesome.
Russia as second was great as well, because it was a good song and it had Dima (even though he could use a hair-cut). I am not talking about the voting system and how neighbours are either that (neighbours) or not giving a shit about political relations (which is good in a way).

Anyway, I just want to mention that I loved ARD's commentator Peter Urban., because this time he was really, really in a mood, which was great. He sauid all the things Josi and thought, to the point most of the time. And he was so damn snarky and bitchy sometimes that he was even more of a highlight then some of the song. Awesome.
Oh and the Greek guy reading out the votes, hillarious. An elderly, pretty conservative guy. Grey hair but a smirk, that told you he was up to something. When he was reading out the final 12 points from Greece he said "And 12 points go the gorgeous, sweet looking creatures or Finland"!!!! Awesome.

[livejournal.com profile] sandrine has written a wonderful summary of the whole event, and I agree with most of her points.
So, since I am way too lazy to type it up all on my own I will link to her entry -> Read :)

Okay, I typed my notes up anyway. At least some of them.. Not all...

Athens 2006:
Switzerland (six4one, "If We All Give A Little"): Bette Middler cover (in a bad way). I don't like Ralf Siegel songs anymore, god can't he write anything else? What did Georg Uecker say? Siegel still tries to make up with Love and Peace songs for the lyrics of "Dschingis Khan". Oh why!

Moldova (Arsenium feat. Natalia Gordienko & Connect-R, "Loca"): I mean come on that guy calls himsewlf Arsenium. Toxic?. And it so looked liked playback it hurt. No lip-synch. My notes say, cheap Latino cover with losing some clothes. Can it be more obvious? Sex sells, not this time though. And he can't sing.

Israel (Eddie Butler, "Together We Are One"): He sang Hebrew but it was too much soul and yeah boring.

Spain (Las Ketchup, "Bloody Mary"): WTF Choreography? What were they doing?

Germany (Texas Lightning, "No No Never"): I think thesy did great and it kinda got the party started. The atmosphere after that as way better than before. And I like the song and the band. And they deserved better then 15th (we really don't have friends in Europe, okay some we have since we got more than 30 points this time).

Denmark (Sidsel Ben Semmane, "Twist Of Love"): I lkied it. A lot. I voted and still the song was even behind Germany. It is a good song and catchy. So she deserved better as well.

Russia (Dima Bilan, "Never Let You Go"): DIMA! And ydes I liked the song. Voted. Liked it.

Bosnia and Herzegovina : Kinda sad and slow. Not bad though. And I can see why people voted and why it got third. So yes, nice song.

United Kingdom (Daz Sampson, "Teenage Life"): I liked it. The show was col.

Greece (Anna Vissi, "Everything"): Kinda overdramatic. Not really my case.

Finland (Lordi Hard Rock, "Hallelujah"): COOL! WINGS! ROCK! YES!

Ireland (Brian Kennedy, "Every Song Is A Cry For Love"): Uhm. Nope. I thought the whole time "I want Ronan back".

Armenia (André, "Without Your Love"): The Fuck? How annoying was that? Very if you ask me..

I have to confess that I was hopineg Russia would win over Finland when it was obvious who the top two were because I really liked Dima. The other two that I really liked that you didn't mention were Norway and Macedonia. I thought Norway's song was so pretty (I kept repeating it on my Ipod today) and the white dress was just gorgeous - I still don't see why it didn't score well. Macedonia's was just cute and fun and I liked it.

Ohhh couple of things that I forgot to mention (sorry)!

1. I was really disappointed when Belguim didn't make it into the final because I loved the song.

2. Ditto with Iceland. I thought it was FABULOUS and hilarious and exactly the kind of thing I'd do if I was at Eurovison. Itw as really clever, fun and awesome if you got the joke behind it!

3. I STIL have WE-ARE-THE-WINNERS-OF-EUROVISION stuck in my head and I can't get it out. It was very catchy - I will give it that.

Surfed LJs re. ESC and mostly everyone keeps saying: DIMA!!!!11eleventyone!!

Wow. I've never been a minority. cool. I didn't like the song one bit.

At least, I'm on par re. Las Ketchup. Was going WTF?!? as well. Though their horrible, no good singing was annoying me more than the performance. It felt as if each girl sang to the tune in her head - determinedly at cross with the others. *shudders*
