Phelps breaks American Record in 200 IM

Time of 1:58.68 the third-fastest in history
FORT LAUDERDALE – The 2002 Phillips 66 Summer National Championships promised to be one of the most exciting meets since the 2000 Olympic Games.

And Day 1 at the Hall of Fame Aquatic Complex wouldn’t disappoint.

Kicking it all off was Michael Phelps, 17, of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, who set the American, U.S. Open and meet record in the 200m IM with a time of 1:58.68. He is the second-fastest swimmer in the history of the event, behind Finland's Jani Sievenen.

Sievenen holds the world record at 1:58.16.

“My first 50 felt unbelievable,” Phelps said. “I saw I was out and a body length ahead of everybody, and when I turned at the breaststroke I heard everybody screaming, so I knew something was going on. From there I pretty much turned it on.”

Phelps led the race from end to end and was ahead of world record pace through 150 meters.

“I would have like to have been maybe six-tenths faster now,” Phelps said with a grin. “But I’m definitely happy with my time. I wanted to break two minutes, I will say that, and see how close to the record I could get, but I’m happy with my time.”

In the other big race of the evening, Natalie Coughlin, 19, of California Aquatics defeated Jenny Thompson in the 100m fly with a time of 58.49. The 29-year-old Thompson surprised many by outracing Coughlin in prelims to earn top seed in the finals.

“That didn’t really surprise me,” Coughlin said. “It’s Jenny Thompson, and it’s her event. That’s what she’s known for – the 100 fly and the 100 free, so I wasn’t surprised at all, I was just happy I was right next to her in the prelims. It was a really fun race.

Thompson led the finals through the first 50 meters, but Coughlin took the lead after the turn using her signature underwater dolphin kick.

“I actually thought I would go faster than that tonight,” Coughlin said. “This morning felt really calm and controlled, and I felt like I had a lot more.

“But I’m just glad I made the Pan Pac team now. The rest of the meet should be really fun because I don’t have to worry about it now.”

Thompson also made the Pan Pac team with her second-place finish.

“I really felt good about what happened,” she said. “It was nice to come back and be the underdog.”

In the other two events, world champions Maggie Bowen of Auburn won the 400m IM with a time of 4:43.23, and Klete Keller of Club Wolverine won the 400m free with a 3:48.60.

Bowen out-touched Olympian Maddy Crippen of Germantown Academy by .27 seconds.

“I guess I just don’t want to lose,” Bowen said. “I hate losing, and I’ll just hurt myself if I have to. But she’s a really awesome competitor, and I enjoy racing her.”

Keller finished first in one of the most competitive American fields since the 2000 Olympic Trials. Going into the finals, in fact, three swimmers – Erik Vendt, Robert Margalis and Larsen Jensen – had tied for the top seed with a time of 3:52.62.

As the reigning American record holder in the event, Keller was happy to be the one to come out on top.

“I actually haven’t been pulling it off in the last two years,” Keller said. “It’s my best event, my favorite event, and when I’m not up there, I’m not happy. So it feels good to win it again and be down in the area of my best time.”
