Uhm because Berlin is so freaking huge? I am going to the University of Potsdam and my way takes me right through the inner city of Berlin to get there. It usually takes me about 1 1/2h to really get to the campus. I need to take the S-Bahn, then the RegioExpress and then, it depends on the time of the day I am going and to which campus (the main one or the smaller one a little out of the way), I either have to take another train or bus or nothing at all because the RegioExpress stops at the main campus.
